April 1915: The deportation of Ottoman Greeks by the Turks: Gallipoli, Dardanelles and environs

Greek Genocide Resource Center

In April 1915 – approximately 100 years to the day – Ottoman military authorities began deporting #Greeks from the regions of #Gallipoli, #Dardanelles and the environs to the interior of #Turkey.

Greek communities were divided into small groups and  marched without food and water and dispersed into purely Muslim villages where many were encouraged to become Muslims in order to alleviate their suffering. More than 10 persons a day perished.

After evacuating their towns and villages, their homes and fields were looted and their belongings taken.

The following American Embassy report dated August 1915 authored by US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Henry Morgenthau details the treatment of the Greeks of Gallipoli and its environs. Download and read it here.

The story of the Greeks of #Gallipoli has been largely overlooked in contemporary history books. There were some 30,000 Greeks living around the Gallipoli Peninsular in 1915. Two weeks before the Allies landed there, the Ottoman authorities – under German orders – deported these Greeks, many to the interior of Asia Minor where nearly half perished. While the Germans were acting on “military necessity” the Ottoman authorities took this as an opportunity to rid the Ottoman Empire of its minorities.
