Greek authorities say more than a thousand illegal crossings were thwarted and dozens of human smugglers arrested during a chaotic 24 hours at the Turkish border, according to reports.

Approximately 1,500 illegal aliens attempted to enter Greece on Thursday near Evros, the northernmost region of the country.

On Saturday, Greek officials revealed what had transpired during interviews with Skai and announced further measures Athens plans to take to secure the border.

“The day before yesterday, 1,500 illegal immigrants tried to cross Evros for 24 hours and most of them at night,” said Civil Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos.

“Sixty smugglers have been arrested and are facing trial because they created networks for ‘trafficking in human beings.’”

He also blamed Turkey for “forcefully pushing migrants to the borders of our country.”

Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi said planning is underway to extend the barrier along the Greece-Turkey border by 80 km, tripling the length of the existing 40 km fence.

“Humanitarianism is very important but the people that wish to come to EU due to the inequalities that exist in the world are thousands of millions,” Mitarachi told Skai.

“We do not speak of a closed Europe but neither of a Europe that the traffickers will decide who will come to Europe.”

Border pressure in the Evros region has been on rise, as Infowars Europe has reported.

Earlier this year, Greek authorities reported that tens of thousands of illegal crossings at the land border with Turkey were thwarted during the first four months of 2022.

Greece has been battling smuggling networks and non-governmental organizations that operate human pipelines which funnel migrants from around the world through Turkey and into Europe.
