A powerful explosion occurred on the main street of Pera in Constantinople’s (“Istanbul”) Taksim Square, with reports of deaths and several injuries.
The explosion occurred on the well-known Great Street of Pera (Istiklal), the most touristic spot in Constantinople, where scenes of panic prevailed.
Strong police forces, ambulances and rescuers rushed to the scene to provide first aid to the injured.
The Governor of Constantinople spoke of dead and wounded, without mentioning a number.
Turkish media reports earlier said at least 11 people were injured.
The Greek Consulate in Constantinople (“Istanbul”) currently has no information about Greeks among the victims.
The explosion occurred very close to the Sismanoglio Mansion of the Greek Consulate in the city.
The cause of the powerful explosion is currently unknown – whether it was due to an explosive device or possibly a gas leak.
The wider area has been cordoned off.
