Flashback: CNN Admitted Smartmatic Voting Machines Can’t Be Trusted

‘Why do Venezuelans control a U.S. voting machine firm?’ asks CNN report.

A 2006 report from CNN proves the network’s been well aware of the sketchiness behind foreign-owned Smartmatic voting machines, despite current claims the machines are to be trusted.

The report, titled “Democracy for Sale,” features former anchor Lou Dobbs explaining the dangers of having foreign entities running US elections.

“Critics say our very democracy is now for sale, without anyone doing a thing about it,” Dobbs says, setting up the report, as a chyron asks, “Why do Venezuelans control a U.S. voting machine firm?”

In the exposé, reporter Kitty Pilgrim points out Chicago city officials were uneasy when a team of Venezuelans showed up to service machine problems.

The use of some 19,000 electronic voting machines in this city of Chicago and Cook County primary on March 21st of this year is now under intense scrutiny. The U.S. company that makes the machines, Sequoia, was bought in 2005 by Smartmatic, a private company primarily owned by Venezuelan businessmen. When Chicago had problems with the machines, a dozen Venezuelan employees were there to help with the election. Chicago officials are outraged.

In the report, a spokesperson for voter integrity watchdog group Vote Trust USA said, “We believe this is a national security issue. There’s no way that companies belonging to non-US corporations should have access to our elections.”

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) also highlights the problem with the private company’s history of being bought and sold by various entities, obscuring its history and ownership.

“That is why I wrote the Department of Treasury to ask about ownership of Smartmatic. In 2005, Sequoia Voting Systems was purchased by Smartmatic, a company primarily owned by Venezuelan businessmen.

“Its offshore, it is murky, no one seems to know who owns it. Certainly our government should know who owns it.”

“The use of some 19,000 electronic voting machines in the city of Chicago and Cook County Primary on March 21st of this year (2006) is under intense scrutiny.”

While new claims assert Smartmatic machines were not widely used in the 2020 election, it’s clear there’ve been concerns with foreign owned electronic voting machines for over a decade.
