Antarctica-Like Landscape Forms in Central Greece

By Tasos Kokkinidis -Feb 27, 2019

A polar-like landscape has formed in Evritania, central Greece, thanks to the snowstorm that struck the area during the last several days. The storm was part of the front dubbed “Oceanis,” which is responsible for dumping huge amounts of snow in the mountains and causing floods in Crete.

Emergency services are working to clear the roads with heavy equipment, as in some parts of the Velouchi region the snow is now twenty feet deep.

Mount Velouchi, located in the Pindus mountain range, has a pass at an elevation of 1.862m (6,108ft) above sea level. Workers are now attempting to clear the enormous snowpack from the narrow road.

A wave of cold, wintry weather hit northern and central Greece on Saturday, covering most parts of the region in snow and pushing temperatures below zero Celsius.

The storm, which weathermen named “Oceanis,” left major cities in northern Greece blanketed in several inches of snow.
