The heartbreaking events unfolded just nine days after the passing of her 72-year-old husband, Kostas Kollias, who died from an aggressive form of leukemia on December 1, 2023. Grieving and struggling to cope with the loss, Vanessa Kollias told a psychiatrist that she felt “absolutely alone” and unable to imagine life without her husband.
On December 10, 2023, authorities reported that Kollias smothered her children while singing “You Are My Sunshine” in what she later described in court as an attempt to reunite the family in heaven. Following the act, she jumped from a balcony in an apparent suicide attempt, surviving but left paralyzed from the waist down.
Police discovered the children deceased in the living room, with their funeral clothes and a photo of their father nearby.
Initially charged with first-degree murder, the charges were later reduced to second-degree murder after the court acknowledged the profound grief that influenced her actions. Kollias was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum of 18 years to be served.
In court, Kollias tearfully addressed her children, saying:
“I love you more than anything. Thank you for showing me what true love is. You will forever be my favorite part. I am so grateful to have become your mom. The hardest thing I will have to do is learn to be here without you.”
The tragedy has left Toronto’s Greek community in deep sorrow, highlighting the profound impact of grief and the importance of mental health support during times of personal loss.
