US President Donald Trump personally intervened with FIFA to overturn the red card received by Folarin Balogan ahead of the match with Belgium.

The USA-Belgium match, at 3:00 am (Greece time) would have been crucial anyway as qualification for the World Cup quarter-finals is being played. However, Donald Trump’s intervention over the red card to Folarin Balogun caused an unprecedented uproar in world football.
The US president himself called the FIFA president, with whom he has close relations, and asked him to do something so that the player who was charged with a red card in the match against Belgium could play.
FIFA, citing a provision of the regulations that had almost never been used, suspended the one-match ban for the card for a year. It was a decision that opened the Aeolus bag.
The chronicle of the cancellation
It all started with a harsh marking by Balogan on his Bosnian opponent last week.

Without Balogan, the American team would have gone down against Belgium weakened.
Trump did not miss the opportunity and called Infantino to see what could be done. In retrospect, both the American president and the head of FIFA admitted that the phone call took place, with the latter insisting that FIFA bodies are independent in their decisions.
In a report, the Wall Street Journal reports that the background was much richer: Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick and Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House World Cup task force and son of Rudy Giuliani, played a central role. The two men allegedly believed that the decision was unfair and that the case required intervention at the highest level.
They persuaded Trump to intervene with Infantino, saying the suspension could hurt the U.S. national team’s chances in the crucial match against Belgium. Trump instructed his aides to find a way to have the suspension lifted.
The U.S. Soccer Federation was quickly informed of the plan, while publicly protesting that it had no way to appeal the decision and that there was no obvious replacement for Balogun on the roster. Within 24 hours, Trump called the man he knew had the power to change things, Gianni Infantino.
According to the Guardian, the US president made three phone calls to Infantino, not one, as first reported by the New York Times, starting on Wednesday (the same day of the match), to persuade him that Balogun’s one-match ban for the red card should be reviewed.
Initially, Infantino agreed to look into the matter, but did not commit to overturning the punishment. When the two men spoke again a few days later, the FIFA president reportedly informed Trump that the ban was being lifted. FIFA used a lesser-known provision, Article 27, which it says allows the Disciplinary Committee to exercise discretion when considering sanctions.
Trump was quick to celebrate the development. “Thank you FIFA for doing the right thing and overturning a great injustice,” he wrote on social media on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Monday morning, the US president defended the national team player, arguing that the incident did not warrant a red card: “It was not a foul. It was two players running at speed and they just collided. It was two great athletes who got tangled up,” was his… conclusion.
But he didn’t stop there, as he left some serious questions about the referee of the match: “This referee is a little suspicious. If you look at his past… I don’t want to say it because I don’t like to create controversy, but he is very suspicious. I think the referee’s decision was unacceptable and nobody is talking about it,” he told reporters.
Belgium and UEFA react
Although Trump and Infantino tried to show that the issue was over, in reality it was just getting bigger.
UEFA has issued a scathing statement against FIFA over the suspension of the US player’s ban. It says the “red line has been crossed”, calling it an “incomprehensible and unjustified decision” and that “every limit has been crossed”.
The Belgian Football Federation said it was “surprised” by the suspension and appealed the decision on the red card. However, as announced on Monday afternoon, the appeal was rejected. The reasoning was that Belgium was not directly involved in the matter and therefore had no right to appeal the original decision.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia questioned whether the case was an April Fool’s joke in July, while Norway coach Staal Solbakken called the decision “bad, bad, bad, bad, bad” and warned that it would damage the World Cup.
Meanwhile, fans, commentators and famous former footballers (Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney) around the world have complained that a head of state has put his hand on the scales, damaging the integrity of the tournament.
The footballer himself has not commented, however, and instead chose to post a photo on Instagram a few hours ago, in which he is on the pitch with his back turned, so that his name on the shirt is visible.
Even U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino found himself in a difficult position. After Balogan’s sending-off, he insisted that “it was never a red card,” stressing that the Americans had been forced to finish the game with a player less and that that was punishment enough. However, he declined to answer whether it was legitimate for the president of the United States to get involved in a football decision.
“In the end, it’s not that we are victims,” Pochettino said in Spanish. “But we are not the bad guys here.”

Ο αγώνας ΗΠΑ-Βελγίου, στις 3:00 τα ξημερώματα (ώρα Ελλάδος) θα ήταν κρίσιμος ούτως ή άλλως καθώς παίζεται η πρόκριση στα προημιτελικά του Μουντιάλ. Η παρέμβαση όμως του Ντόναλντ Τραμπ για την κόκκινη κάρτα στον Φόλαριν Μπαλογκάν προκάλεσε ένα άνευ προηγουμένου σάλο στο παγκόσμιο ποδόσφαιρο.
Ο ίδιος ο πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ κάλεσε τον πρόεδρο της FIFA, με τον οποίο έχει στενές σχέσεις, και του ζήτησε να γίνει κάτι για να αγωνιστεί ο παίκτης που χρεώθηκε με κόκκινη κάρτα στον αγώνα με το Βέλγιο.
Η FIFA, επικαλούμενη μια διάταξη του κανονισμών που σχεδόν δεν είχε χρησιμοποιηθεί ποτέ, έδωσε αναστολή ενός έτους στον αποκλεισμό για έναν αγώνα λόγω της κάρτας. Ήταν μια απόφαση άνοιξε τον ασκό του Αιόλου.
Το χρονικό της ακύρωσης
Όλα άρχισαν από ένα σκληρό μαρκάρισμα του Μπαλογκάν στον Βόσνιο αντίπαλό του την περασμένη εβδομάδα.

Ο Τραμπ δεν έχασε την ευκαιρία και τηλεφώνησε στον Ινφαντίνο για να τι μπορεί να γίνει. Εκ των υστέρων και ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος και ο επικεφαλής της FIFA παραδέχτηκαν ότι έγινε το τηλεφώνημα με τον δεύτερο να επιμένει ότι τα όργανα της FIFA είναι ανεξάρτητα στις αποφάσεις τους.
Σε δημοσίευμα της η Wall Street Journal αναφέρει ότι το παρασκήνιο ήταν πολύ πλουσιότερο: Κεντρικό ρόλο είχαν ο υπουργός Εμπορίου, Χάουαρντ Λάτνικ, και ο Άντριου Τζουλιάνι, εκτελεστικός διευθυντής της ομάδας εργασίας του Λευκού Οίκου για το Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο και γιος του Ρούντι Τζουλιάνι. Οι δύο άνδρες φέρεται να θεώρησαν ότι η απόφαση ήταν άδικη και ότι η υπόθεση απαιτούσε παρέμβαση σε ανώτατο επίπεδο.
Αυτοί έπεισαν τον Τραμπ να παρέμβει στον Ινφαντίνο, λέγοντας ότι η τιμωρία θα μπορούσε να υπονομεύσει τις πιθανότητες της εθνικής ομάδας των ΗΠΑ στον κρίσιμο αγώνα με το Βέλγιο. Ο Τραμπ έδωσε εντολή στους συνεργάτες του να βρουν τρόπο ώστε να αρθεί η τιμωρία.
Η αμερικανική ομοσπονδία ποδοσφαίρου ενημερώθηκε γρήγορα για το σχέδιο, ενώ δημόσια διαμαρτυρόταν ότι δεν είχε τρόπο να προσβάλει την απόφαση και ότι δεν υπήρχε προφανής αντικαταστάτης του Μπαλογκάν στο ρόστερ. Μέσα στις επόμενες 24 ώρες, ο Τραμπ τηλεφώνησε στον άνθρωπο που γνώριζε ότι είχε την ισχύ να αλλάξει τα δεδομένα, τον Τζιάνι Ινφαντίνο.
Σύμφωνα με τον Guardian, τα τηλεφωνήματα του προέδρου των ΗΠΑ στον Ινφαντίνο ήταν τρία και όχι ένα, όπως έγραψαν πρώτοι οι New York Times, αρχής γενομένης από την Τετάρτη (την ίδια ημέρα του αγώνα), προκειμένου να πείσει ότι η ποινή αποκλεισμού μιας αγωνιστικής στον Μπαλογκάν λόγω της κόκκινης κάρτας θα έπρεπε να επανεξεταστεί.
Αρχικά, ο Ινφαντίνο συμφώνησε να εξετάσει το θέμα, χωρίς όμως να δεσμευτεί ότι η τιμωρία θα ανατραπεί. Όταν οι δύο άνδρες μίλησαν εκ νέου μερικές ημέρες αργότερα, ο πρόεδρος της FIFA φέρεται να ενημέρωσε τον Τραμπ ότι η τιμωρία αίρεται. Η FIFA χρησιμοποίησε μια λιγότερο γνωστή διάταξη, το άρθρο 27, το οποίο, σύμφωνα με την ίδια, επιτρέπει στην Πειθαρχική Επιτροπή να ασκεί διακριτική ευχέρεια κατά την εξέταση κυρώσεων.
Ο Τραμπ έσπευσε να πανηγυρίσει την εξέλιξη. «Ευχαριστώ τη FIFA που έκανε το σωστό και ανέτρεψε μια μεγάλη αδικία», έγραψε το απόγευμα της Κυριακής στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα.
Μιλώντας το πρωί της Δευτέρας από το Οβάλ Γραφείο ο πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ υπερασπίστηκε τον ποδοσφαιριστή της εθνικής ομάδας, υποστηρίζοντας ότι η φάση δεν δικαιολογούσε την κόκκινη κάρτα: «Δεν ήταν φάουλ. Ήταν δύο παίκτες που έτρεχαν με ταχύτητα και απλώς συγκρούστηκαν. Ήταν δύο σπουδαίοι αθλητές που μπλέχτηκαν μεταξύ τους», ήταν το… πόρισμά του.
Δεν σταμάτησε όμως εκεί, καθώς άφησε αιχμές για τον διαιτητή της αναμέτρησης: «Αυτός ο διαιτητής είναι λίγο ύποπτος. Αν κοιτάξετε το παρελθόν του… δεν θέλω να το πω γιατί δεν μου αρέσει να δημιουργώ αντιπαραθέσεις, αλλά είναι πολύ ύποπτος. Πιστεύω ότι η απόφαση του διαιτητή ήταν απαράδεκτη και κανείς δεν μιλάει γι’ αυτό» είπε στους δημοσιογράφους.
Αντιδρούν Βέλγιο και UEFA
Αν και ο Τραμπ και ο Ινφαντίνο επιχείρησαν να δείξουν ότι το ζήτημα είναι πια λήξαν, στην πραγματικότητα τότε μόλις γιγαντωνόταν.
H UEFA εξέδωσε αιχμηρή ανακοίνωση κατά της FIFA σχετικά με την αναστολή της τιμωρίας του παίκτη των ΗΠΑ. Τονίζει πως «ξεπεράστηκε η κόκκινη γραμμή», κάνοντας λόγο για ακατανόητη και αδικαιολόγητη απόφαση, αλλά και ότι «ξεπεράστηκε κάθε όριο».
Η ποδοσφαιρική ομοσπονδία του Βελγίου δήλωσε «έκπληκτη» από την ανατροπή της τιμωρίας, ενώ προχώρησε σε έφεση για την απόφαση σχετικά με την κόκκινη. Ωστόσο, όπως ανακοινώθηκε το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας, η έφεση απορρίφθηκε. Το σκεπτικό ήταν ότι το Βέλγιο δεν είχε άμεση εμπλοκή στο ζήτημα και συνεπώς δεν είχε δικαίωμα ν’ ασκήσει έφεση στην αρχική απόφαση.
Ο προπονητής του Βελγίου, Ρούντι Γκαρσία, διερωτήθηκε αν η υπόθεση ήταν πρωταπριλιάτικη φάρσα μέσα στον Ιούλιο, ενώ ο προπονητής της Νορβηγίας, Στάλε Σολμπάκεν, χαρακτήρισε την απόφαση «κακή, κακή, κακή, κακή, κακή» και προειδοποίησε ότι θα βλάψει το Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο.
Εν τω μεταξύ, φίλαθλοι, σχολιαστές και διάσημοι πρώην ποδοσφαιριστές (Ζλάταν Ιμπραχίμοβιτς, Γουέιν Ρούνεϊ) σε όλο τον κόσμο κατήγγειλαν ότι ένας αρχηγός κράτους έβαλε το χέρι του στη ζυγαριά, πλήττοντας την ακεραιότητα της διοργάνωσης.
Ο ίδιος ο ποδοσφαιριστής πάντως δεν έχει τοποθετηθεί, αντιθέτως επέλεξε πριν μερικές ώρες να δημοσιεύσει μία φωτογραφία στο Instagram, στην οποία βρίσκεται στο γήπεδο με γυρισμένη πλάτη, έτσι ώστε να φαίνεται το όνομά του στη φανέλα.
Σε δύσκολη θέση βρέθηκε ακόμη και ο προπονητής των ΗΠΑ, Μαουρίτσιο Ποτσετίνο. Μετά την αποβολή του Μπαλογκάν είχε επιμείνει ότι «δεν ήταν ποτέ κόκκινη κάρτα», τονίζοντας ότι οι Αμερικανοί αναγκάστηκαν να ολοκληρώσουν το παιχνίδι με παίκτη λιγότερο και ότι αυτό ήταν ήδη αρκετή τιμωρία. Ωστόσο, απέφυγε να απαντήσει αν ήταν θεμιτό να εμπλακεί ο πρόεδρος των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών σε μια ποδοσφαιρική απόφαση.
«Στο τέλος, δεν είναι ότι είμαστε θύματα», είπε ο Ποτσετίνο στα ισπανικά. «Αλλά δεν είμαστε εμείς οι κακοί εδώ».
