The New South Wales Legislative Assembly has taken a strong step towards greater national recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides, with a formal motion urging the Federal Government in Canberra to acknowledge these historical atrocities.

On May 28, 2026, Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism and Member for Oatley, Mark Coure MP, tabled a Notice of Motion calling on the Commonwealth to formally recognise the genocides committed by the Ottoman Empire.

Key Points of the Motion

The motion:

1. Acknowledges that April 24, 2026, marked the 111th anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide, which resulted in the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians and over one million Greeks and Assyrians.
2. Reaffirms condemnation of the genocides against the Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks.
3. Recognises the humanitarian efforts of ANZAC soldiers and Australian civilians who aided survivors.
4. Calls on the Federal Government to formally recognise the genocides.

New South Wales has a long-standing record on this issue, with both houses of the NSW Parliament having previously passed resolutions acknowledging the genocides.

Strong Community Support

The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) welcomed the motion. ANC-AU Political Affairs Director Sebastian Majarian stated:

“For more than a century, the descendants of genocide survivors have worked tirelessly to ensure that the truth of these atrocities is acknowledged and remembered. Mr Coure’s motion is a powerful affirmation that New South Wales stands on the side of historical truth and justice.”

He added that recognition sends a clear message that crimes against humanity must never be denied or forgotten.

The motion is expected to be debated in the NSW Legislative Assembly in the coming weeks.
