Turkish Alarm: “If Greece and Cyprus Acquire BrahMos, Eastern Mediterranean Military Balance Will Change Radically

Turkish defense analyst Ardan Zenturk has warned that Greece’s potential acquisition of the Indian supersonic BrahMos missile would fundamentally alter the military balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkish media and defense circles are expressing deep concern over an emerging multi-billion-dollar strategic defense axis between India, Greece, and Cyprus.

Why Turkey’s Defense Establishment is Worried

According to reports in Indian outlets such as Moneycontrol and News18, Turkish military analysts view the possible deployment of Indian missiles near their coasts as a direct threat to Ankara’s “Blue Homeland” (Mavi Vatan) maritime ambitions.

The BrahMos missile, capable of speeds between Mach 2.8 and 3.0, flies at extremely low altitudes — skimming as low as 10 meters above the sea surface. Analysts like Zenturk argue this capability could blind or overwhelm Turkey’s Russian-made S-400 Triumf air defense systems.

Cost-Effective Naval Denial

For Greece and Cyprus, land-based coastal BrahMos batteries represent a highly economical solution compared to building large surface fleets. At an estimated $3.5 million per missile, a limited number of well-positioned launchers could create a potent anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) shield, putting Turkey’s larger navy at a significant disadvantage.

Concerns extend beyond the BrahMos. Turkey is also monitoring India’s development of the Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LR-LACM), which could threaten critical infrastructure on the Turkish mainland from Aegean islands.

Geopolitical Chessboard

Cyprus as a Gateway
Because direct sales to Greece could trigger diplomatic and legal complications within NATO, Turkish intelligence reportedly believes Athens might use Cyprus as an indirect channel.

India-Cyprus Roadmap
New Delhi and Nicosia recently upgraded relations to a Strategic Partnership and signed a five-year defense cooperation roadmap. Cyprus is also exploring a €1.2 billion defense procurement package under the EU’s SAFE program, which includes interest in Indian cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.

The Pakistan Factor
India’s willingness to export strategic weapons to Turkey’s rivals is widely seen as a direct counterbalance to Ankara’s strong military and geopolitical support for Pakistan on international platforms.

No official sales agreement has yet been announced by New Delhi or Athens. However, the psychological and tactical deterrent effect of the BrahMos has already forced Ankara to reassess its security posture.
