Two Greek tourists were arrested on the afternoon of Holy Thursday (9/4) in Istanbul for unfurling a Greek flag with the Byzantine eagle inside Hagia Sophia.
More specifically, according to information, the two of them were allegedly holding a flag that read “Orthodoxy or Death” and shouting slogans inside the sacred space. They are a woman with a Greek passport and a man with Greek and Australian passports.
As seen in a video from the security cameras, the individuals entered Hagia Sophia as members of an organized excursion. After passing through security checks, they moved to the upper floor of the gallery, which is open to visitors.

Then one of the tourists took out a flag he had hidden inside his jacket and unfolded it. After posing for a photo, he handed the flag to another person in the group, who then posed in turn. Security personnel quickly caught the situation from security cameras and intervened, while another person in the group appeared ready to hold the same flag.
According to reports, the flag depicted a double-headed eagle along with a written message that read: “Orthodoxy or death!”

They were later brought to the Istanbul court and formally arrested on charges of insulting a section of the public.

Δύο Έλληνες τουρίστες συνελήφθησαν το απόγευμα της Μεγάλης Πέμπτης (9/4) στην Κωνσταντινούπολη γιατί άνοιξαν ελληνική σημαία με τον βυζαντινό αετό εντός της Αγίας Σοφίας.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες οι δύο τους φέρεται να κρατούσαν μία σημαία που έγραφε «Ορθοδοξία ή Θάνατος» και να φώναζαν συνθήματα μέσα στον ιερό χώρο. Πρόκειται για μία γυναίκα με ελληνικό διαβατήριο και έναν άνδρα με διαβατήρια Ελλάδας και Αυστραλίας.
Όπως φαίνεται σε βίντεο από τις κάμερες ασφαλείας, τα άτομα εισήλθαν στην Αγία Σοφία ως μέλη οργανωμένης εκδρομής. Αφού πέρασαν από ελέγχους ασφαλείας, μετακινήθηκαν στον επάνω όροφο της στοάς, ο οποίος είναι ανοιχτός για τους επισκέπτες.
