In a special episode of the Daily Mail’s Queens, Kings and Dastardly Things podcast, royal biographers Robert Hardman and Kate Williams chart the blood-soaked life of one of history’s most villainous princes, Vlad the Impaler.
Vlad ruled intermittently over a region called Wallachia, part of modern-day Romania, between 1448 and 1476. During the medieval period, the region sat at a crossroads between Christian Europe and the Islamic Ottoman Empire, a precarious buffer state between the two opposing worlds.
The prince’s reign was marked by constant war and shifting alliances between rival powers. Historians still debate whether Wallachia’s precarity hardened Vlad into a monster or whether he was simply what we would today call a psychopath…
