Iraqi ‘Refugee’ Charged in Rape of 11-Year-Old Girl in Greece

A male migrant from Iraq is being prosecuted for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in Greece, according to reports.

The horrifying incident took place on August 9 in Katerini, a city in the region of Central Macedonia.

The victim was playing with a friend in Macedonia Square in the city center when she was lured away by a man who brought her to his apartment, Thess Today reports.

When the child was late to return home, her mother came looking for her, and learned from the friend that the girl had left with a stranger.

Officers later located the victim and the suspect on a main street and the man was arrested after the child indicated she had been violated.

A forensic examination revealed the girl had been raped.

The traumatized child was subsequently hospitalized for 10 days at the Child Psychiatric Clinic.

Booking photographs and details about the suspect were recently released.

He was identified as Omar Shaikly, a 30-year-old Iraqi national who lives in Greece as a recognized ‘asylum seeker,’ according to Proto Thema.

Local officials have pushed back against ‘racist’ claims that immigration policies played any role in the heinous crime.

“This is a heinous act and we condemn it,” said Dimitrios Vainas, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Development. “It is a fact that Greece must accept immigrants who are persecuted by their countries for many reasons.”

“Besides that, we as a municipality cannot psychoanalyze each refugee about who he is, what he stands for and what perversions he may have.”

An investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing.
