Erdogan at UN: “Greece Commits Crimes Against Humanity”

President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, in one of his most horrific verbal attacks yet accused Greece of crimes against humanity during his speech at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Erdogan accused Greece of intentionally drowning babies and even presented photos of dead babies, claiming that these were the results of violent pushbacks by the Greek Coast Guard.

Erdogan noted that “we don’t want to see more dead babies like Aylan wash up on our shores.” He asserted that last week a nine-month-old baby and a four-year-old child perished when the Greek Coast Guard sank their boats.

The Turkish President called on the UN to demand that Greece put an immediate stop to its crimes against humanity and proclaimed that “Greeks tyrannize refugees in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean” and are “turning the Aegean into a graveyard.”

Greece is “ridiculous”

Continuing the increase of provocations, Erdogan called Greece “ridiculous” as it “seeks to make a show of strength.”

“In the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean, we want everything to be resolved based on the rules of good neighborliness and on the basis of international law,” he said.

“In the eastern Mediterranean, maintaining peace depends on respecting the rights of all sides,” Erdogan added. “Greece should put aside provocations and escalation and respond to our calls for solidarity and cooperation.”

“We believe that the Euro-Mediterranean summit that we have proposed will serve this purpose,” he went on to say, but “they never took a positive step and this shows who wants peace and stability and who wants to provoke and create conflicts.”

“We will defend our rights in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean and we will not succumb to the escalation policies followed by other countries,” he added.

“Greece is a member of the EU and they are pushing forward in the Aegean in an inhumane way and…are applying similar policies to the Turkish minority in Thrace, ignoring their obligations,” Erdogan concluded. “What we want to see is Greece doing its best,” and hence, “[we are] asking the EU not to turn a blind eye.”

Foreign Minister of Greece responds to Erdogan statement at the UN

In response to comments made by Erdogan, Geek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias—while in New York—said, “The country that is instrumentalizing the issue of migration, endangering tens of thousands of lives, comes here to accuse Greece of crimes against humanity when in fact it is using false data that has been discredited for over ten days.”

“The country that directly threatens with war,…that has a standing casus belli,…[and] that questions Greek sovereignty over the islands of the Aegean comes here to talk about good neighborly relations,” added Dendias, amused.

“The country that occupies foreign territory, including that of the Republic of Cyprus, comes here to talk about conditions of security and co-operation in the Eastern Mediterranean,” Dendias responded.

“Turkey would be best served to respect international law,” Dendias replied, “and to return as quickly as possible to the realm of the rational.”

“Certain claims by the Turkish side have been heard and answered many times,” he commented. “Firstly, Greece is a European country that absolutely respects human rights and, of course, the rights of its Muslim community.”

“After all, this is proven by the raw numbers,” he said. “The Muslim community in Greece is growing, expanding, and prospering,” said Dendias in response to claims that Greece is discriminating against its Muslim community.

“We call on Turkey to [comment] on what happened to the Greek community of Constantinople (“Istanbul”) and how the once thriving—with more than one hundred thousand members—community today numbers less than five thousand people,” the Foreign Minister remarked.
