According to Greek news website ProNews.gr

The former head of the Greek Intelligence Services (EYP) during SYRIZA, Giannis Roubatis, who has excellent relations with the current Greek government and the dismissed director of the EYP, Panagiotis Kondoleontas, stated publicly that he justifies Prosecutor V. Vlachos signing of the monitoring of Nikosw Androulakis and basically claims that the PASOK/ KINAL party leader was suspected of committing a felony or of being in contact with people who would commit criminal acts against National Security.

Mr. Roubatis was asked to express an opinion on whether it is legal to monitor MPs or MEPs where he argued that, in his opinion, it is illegal, while he repeated that for all the issues he handled as head of EYP (2015-2019) he informed the then prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, either verbally or in writting. However, he then reportedly said that the monitoring of Mr. Androulakis could be justified, as long as there was a huge amount of information, as well as that the prosecutor responsible for supervising EYP, Vasiliki Vlachou, has a lot of experience and would not give the “green light” » for the wiretapping without substantiated proof.

The former Greek intelligence head (EYP) allegedly admitted at yesterday’s Inquiry Commission on the Greek wiretapping scandal that the electronic files of the spy agency regarding wiretappings are, usually, destroyed, but written notes are kept for 2 years, estimating that something similar would have happened in the Androulakis case as well. He even allegedly spoke about special handling files to which only a few employees of EYP have access

Regarding the illegal surveillance software, he is reported to have said that during his tenure he was not aware of the existence of a spyware system in Greece, either by a private person or by a state body.

According to sources, Mr. Roubatis is said to have agreed with the way the Greek government, former and current, is dealing with Turkey’s attempts to instrumentalize immigration and justified the significant increase in legal wiretappings due to increased illgela immigration flows and other national risks that arise.
