Acropolis Receives Record 16,000 Visitors Daily

More than sixteen thousand visitors enter the gates of the Acropolis of Athens each day this year, according to a recent announcement from the Greek Ministry of Tourism.

Τhe Ministry of Tourism revealed foreign tourist arrivals, comprised predominately of Americans, began in March, much earlier than ever, and have hence resulted in pre-pandemic levels thus far.

Minister of Tourism Vasilis Kikilias along with Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni have also visited the archaeological site of the Acropolis.

The visit to the Acropolis by both Ministers began at the entrance of the archaeological area for people with disabilities. This is where vehicles pick up visitors with disabilities to transport them to an elevator that then allows them to exit at the rock of the Acropolis, the Ministry explained.

In addition, it was noted that other persons who encounter general mobility issues can enter the entire archaeological area along with persons with disabilities.

Recent changes and schedules bring more people to the Acropolis

Commenting on his visit to the Acropolis, Kikilias said: “This proves in practice that the planning of the Ministry of Tourism to extend the tourist season is paying off, as in many cases, the figures of 2022 approach those of 2019, despite the fact that these two years cannot be compared due to multiple crises that all countries face this year” such as inflation and the pandemic.

The Minister of Tourism acknowledged that such difficulties seem to have been “equalized” by the targeted actions taken in previous months. These measures include direct flights from the United States to “El Venizelos” which started at the beginning of March, as well as efforts to expand the tourist season to the end of the year.

On July 27th, Kikilias also revealed that a total of 5.7 million travelers are expected to arrive to Greece’s capital by air in the second half of the year.

The goal, based on data thus far, seems to have been achieved. In addition, it is estimated that the tourist season will last until December 22nd of this year, Minister of Tourism added.

In this regard, the Ministry of Tourism made known that 3,481,000 international visitors arrived at Athens International Airport in June.

During the month of May, the turnover of accommodations saw an increase of more than €26 million in comparison to May 2019, amounting to half a billion euros, the Minister confirmed.

At the same time, the turnover of businesses in the catering sector has increased by €40 million compared to the same period of 2019.

Greek authorities also previously announced that the country expects to welcome almost one million tourists to the country’s airports in the first week of August alone.
