Gov. Gavin Newsom Declares All California Teachers Must Get COVID Injection
Draconian announcement comes just days after Newsom assured Californians that school staff wouldn’t be subjected to mandatory shots.
Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom announced that all teachers and school staff in California must get the COVID shot or be subjected to weekly testing, making it the first state in the nation to impose such a draconian mandate.
“We’re now following up today to align our school strategy to the state strategy to become the first state in the country to require that all of our staff — not just just teachers; credentialed staff, para-educators, custodial staff, bus drivers — folks who are critical to supporting the school ecosystem also submit a verification of vaccination and/or submit to weekly testing,” Newsom said in a press conference on Wednesday.
“We think this is the right thing to do, and we think this is a sustainable way to keep our schools open and to address the number-one anxiety our parents have,” he continued, “which is knowing that schools are doing everything in their power to keep our kids safe, to keep our kids healthy.”
“We believe this will be well-received,” he added.
California Teachers Association president E. Toby Boyd then issued a statement praising Newsom’s announcement.
“Educators want to be in classrooms with their students, and the best way to make sure that happens is for everyone who is medically eligible to be vaccinated, with robust testing and multi-tiered safety measures,” Boyd stated. “Today’s announcement is an appropriate next step to ensure the safety of our school communities and to protect our youngest learners under 12 who are not yet vaccine eligible from this highly contagious Delta variant.”
The announcement comes just five days after assuring Californians that he wouldn’t require school staff to get the COVID shot.
“We’re confident in the approach we’re taking at the moment,” he had said Friday, referring to the mask mandate he imposed for students in the state.
