The biggest problem Greeks face in having the #GreekGenocide recognized is their internal division. Greeks are currently divided based on where they originated in Ottoman Turkey; namely Eastern Thrace, Asia Minor and Pontus. Up until the mid 1980’s the persecution of Greeks was considered a single phenomenon, but around this time, a small group of Pontic Greeks decided to break away from the two other groups to seek recognition only for the region of Pontus. This has caused numerous problems, not only for law makers who are confused over multiple calls for regional recognitions, but also for researchers and the public who are led to believe that only the Pontian Greeks were victims of genocide. Let’s not forget the Antioch Greeks (from Syria, Lebanon etc), who were also persecuted during the genocide and have been completely excluded from the narrative due to these divisions.
This tribal/regional mentality is continuing today and is led by groups of small-minded community leaders in the Pontic fraternity mostly based in Greece who continue to present the genocide in a way that suits their agenda and who don’t understand the importance of unity. Their most recent attempt at dividing the victims of the Greek Genocide was during a meeting they had with Greek leaders in 2019. Please read and sign our petition below to help put an end to this small mindedness that serves no purpose but to divide the victims. Please note: The majority of Pontic Greeks oppose this division but have no say in what their leaders are doing.
