The Democratic and Republican parties in the US Congress have prepared a bill that would impose sanctions on Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and several of its ministers for its military operation in Syria.

US Senators Lindsey Graham and Chris Van Hollen published the bill on Thursday night on behalf of a bipartisan group of lawmakers that would impose several sanctions packages including freezing US financial assets of Erdogan as well as defense, foreign and finance ministers. Trade and energy for Turkey, as well as visa restrictions for the Turkish leadership.

The bill prohibits any US assistance to Turkish military personnel and imposes “sanctions on any foreign figure who sells or provides the Turkish military sector with any financial, material or technical support or intentionally carries out any financial dealings with him.”

The sanctions offered by lawmakers also target the Turkish energy sector, as well as punishing the country for buying Russian S-400 air defense systems.
