Tourist, 26, goes missing on hike in Greece after his car is found abandoned

POLICE in Greece have launched a major search operation after a British tourist failed to return from a hike.

By nightfall a police spokeswoman said there was still no trace of the 26-year-old Briton despite the search broadening across a wider area in the Pindos moutain range and dogs being brought in.

The missing man, who has not been named, was last seen on Sunday morning in the northwest town of Konitsa.

His father called emergency services on Monday, saying his son’s phone seems to have been deactivated.

A car belonging to the missing tourist was then found at bout 8pm local time near the village of Mikro Papigo.

He had reportedly gone for a hike in the Zagoria district.

A police spokeswoman in Athens told the Sun Online tonight: “We will resume the search at daybreak tomorrow.

“His family received a text message on Sunday saying he was heading into the mountains on a hike toward Mount Tymfi.”

‘WE THINK HE’S ALIVE’

Police, she said, were still working on the premise that the missing Briton was alive and would leave no stone unturned once emergency forces expanded the search again on tomorrow, three days after he was last seen.

The spokeswoman added: “His car was found without any sign of violation.

“We are pulling out all the stops including getting permission from a public prosecutor to take measures that I cannot divulge.”

Konitsa is a town near Greece’s border with Albania, built on a mountainside and overlooking a valley.

It is a regional hub for the surrounding villages and a popular starting point for tourists and hikers wanting to explore the Pindos mountains.

Recent months have seen a number of Brits going missing abroad.

In August, Natalie Christopher, an astrophysicist from London, disappeared while out jogging in Cyprus.

Her body was later discovered at the bottom of a ravine, apparently having been hit by a large boulder.

In September, 15-year-old Nora Quoirin disappeared in Malaysia, sparking a huge manhunt of the area surrounding the resort where she was staying.

Her family suspected she had been abducted, and her naked body was found a week after her disappearance in an area of rain forest.
