GREECE has been rocked by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake this morning, just north of the tourist island of Crete.

The quake struck Pyrgos, located in the western part of the Peloponnese just after 7am this morning. It recorded a 5.0 magnitude and was 10km in depth, according to the United States Geological Survey. It is not yet known whether anyone was injured by the earthquake or if damage was caused to infrastructure.

Today’s quake is the largest one to hit the area of Pyrgos this year, with the area having experienced 28 earthquakes in the past 365 days.

It comes after much of Europe prepared for a shock mega-quake yesterday, amid warnings a shock earthquake could unlease a tsunami into Mediterranean’s tourist hotpots.

Ten leading navies carried out a surprise four-day ‘Mighty Waves’ drill intended to prepare EU countires for a earthquake-tsunami disaster.
