US citizen ‘is being tortured in Saudi Arabia’ after being locked up – Daily News #US, #citizen, #being, #tortured, #SaudiArabia, #after, #being, #locked Saudi Arabia has been accused of torturing a US citizen who was locked up by the Arab kingdom more than a year ago as part of a crackdown on dissent. Dr Walid Fitaihi, who was born in Saudi but lived and studied in the US for years including at Harvard, told friends he was beaten and electrocuted shortly after his arrest in November 2017. News of Dr Fitaihi’s torture comes after Saudi Arabia admitted its agents murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post journalist and US resident.
American intelligence services have pinned the murder directly on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – something the country denies. Fitaihi, 54, was one of around 600 prominent Saudis detained inside the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman consolidated his power. The visit came after the New York Times published a report in which a source close to Fitaihi claimed he had been tortured shortly after he was locked up.Saudi guards were accused of taking Fitaihi to a hotel room where he was slapped, stripped, blindfolded, and strapped to a chair. He was then given electric shocks and whipped across the back during a torture session than lasted an hour, the paper reported.
John Bolton, the White House national security advisor, was asked about Fitaihi’s treatment, in an interview with CNN’s ‘State of the Union.”As of this moment, my understanding is we’ve had what’s called consular access, meaning American diplomats in Saudi Arabia have visited with him.’Beyond that, we don’t really have any additional information at this point,’ Bolton added.Dr Fitaihi has never been charged with a crime, but friends say he was questioned about a relative of his, Adel Fakeih, after his arrest.Fakeih was a former top aide to the crown prince and has also been arrested. After months of quietly trying to secure his release, the family of Dr. Walid Fitaihi is now seeking to publicly pressure both the Saudi government and the Trump administration on the issue.’There is an American citizen being tortured in a Saudi prison,’ said Howard Cooper, a lawyer working with the Fitaihi family.  ‘He has been not only psychologically tortured but physically tortured and he can’t hold out much longer.’Fitaihi gained his American citizenship while studying and working in the U.S. for years. He received undergraduate and medical degrees from George Washington University and a master’s in public health from Harvard. He returned to Saudi Arabia in 2006 to help found a hospital built by his family and also became a popular motivational speaker on television.President Donald Trump has faced
