Group of Anarchists Invades Defense Ministry in Athens (video)

Members of the Rouvikonas anarchist group evaded security and invaded the courtyard of the Greek Pentagon on Friday afternoon.

In an unprecedented breach of security of one of the best guarded sites in Greece, the group of about 20 anarchists was able to walk freely until the main entrance of the building.

They threw leaflets, before security staff finally pushed them away.

Minister of Defense, Panos Kammenos was not in the building at the time of the breach, as he is on an official visit to Canada.

The Hellenic National Defense General Staff has called for an urgent inquiry into the event, looking for the person(s) responsible for the breach.

Rouvikonas (Greek for Rubicon) is responsible for dozens of similar actions, including more violent acts of vandalism and assaults against perceived targets, including state offices, financial agencies, media and politicians.

In a post on the anti-establishment Indymedia website, Rouvikonas claim the breach was part of the Polytechnic School uprising mobilization and a move against the “deep state”.

The group claims that the current government is making war-like choices, referring to the F-16 upgrade deal with the US, which “will be upon us in the years to come”.

Opposition parties have been critical to the government for the breach, with socialist PASOK saying it offers immunity to the anarchist group, and centrist Potami ridiculing the government’s inability to prevent the breach by saying “next up, Rouvikonas will be going to the PM’s office for coffee with Mr. Tsipras.”
