Slovenia’s government said Monday it would take measures to strengthen control of its border with Croatia ahead of the expected arrival of a wave of 20,000-30,000 migrants.
Large numbers of migrants built up during a Greek ferry strike. But the strike has ended, and the migrants have started heading north from Greece through the Balkans.
At the same time, Austria’s Interior Minister Johanna Mikl Leitner signals the country intends to close its borders. As a result, Slovenia fears the thousands of new arrivals could end up stranded inside its borders.
To prevent chaos, the government has decided to start building a barbed wire fence 120 kilometres of fence to secure part of its border with Croatia.
Slovenia has bought barbed wire from Hungary.

Slovenia has two million people.
The closure of the Slovenian border is expected to have a knock on effect throughout the Balkans.
Anticipating that migrants arriving in Greece may soon no longer be able to move north, the EU is planning new refugee centers.
Pressure is also growing on Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to close its borders with Turkey.
Mikl Leitner said that Greece should accept the many offers of help it has received to close its borders.
The focus has turned from the martime border of Greece with Turkey to its land border guarded by a fence.
